The Great Roath Bake Off 2013- Well Done Wayne!

Following last years success, organiser Wayne Courtney can be very proud that this year’s Great Roath Bake Off kicked last years backside!

Cakes- judgesWith fellow judges, I chomped my way through almost 100 entries. I have never eaten so much cake! The standard of entries were high but the winning cake stood out above the rest.

Lisa Watts’ Chocolate Salted Caramel Crunch cake was my favourite by far. I clocked it before the judging began because it looked so delicious and it tasted even better than it looked. It scored very highly on all four of our judging criteria- taste, presentation, quality of bake and texture.

The savoury category was a welcome break from all the sugar and the winner was Bill Ward with his Pork Pie. Pork Pies don’t usually float my boat but this one was packed full of well seasoned meat and light and crispy pastry and was a clear winner for me.

There was also a Professional Bake category won by Nato & Co Portuguese with their Portuguese Tarts and a Children’s category won by Molly Spivey with her White chocolate, pomegranate and raspberry cake.

All in all a great day and I am honoured to have been asked to judge. Roll on next years event!

The Great Roath Bake Off 2013!

It’s that time of year again. The time of year I get to eat masses of cakes at Roath’s favourite food event; The Great Roath Bake Off!

Following the success of last year’s bake off at The Coffee House on Wellfield Road, organiser Wayne Courtney has plans to make this year’s event even bigger and better than last year. This time it will be held at St Andrew’s Church Hall and as well as the bake off there will be live music, refreshments and craft stalls.

I was a judge last year and I am very pleased to be invited back this year along with some familiar faces from last year and some new faces included BBC weather lady Sue Charles!

There are three categories this year:

Best Cake
Best Bake: Bread/Pie/Other
Best Bake/Cake Under 16′s

Entrants should bring their cake or bake to the venue by 1pm on the day, and you won’t need to fill in an entry form in advance. Entry is £3 per bake. A panel of expert judges (yes, that’s right, experts!…ish) will decide the winners of The Great Roath Bake Off 2013.

The Bake Off takes place on Saturday 6th April and is open to everyone. It’s such a fun day so bring your cakes and bakes down or just come along for an entertaining day out!

The event is in aid of MacMillan and St Andrew’s Church fund. If you’d like to donate a raffle prize, please get in touch.

Recipes Needed For Charity Cook Book

If you are a professional foodie or just enjoy a spot of baking an opportunity has arisen for you to contribute to a local Welsh charity.

Thrive has been running for 16 years, since 1996, providing access to play to children with disabilities.  The lovely Debs from Love Peace and Cupcake has asked me to put out the word to help her friend Sarah from Penarth who is putting together a recipe book filled with contributed recipes from local people.

If you have a great recipe, whether that’s your favourite chocolate cheesecake or your yorkshire pudding top tips, you can contribute. This book will go on sale in South Wales and all profits will go to the charity.

If you would be interested in putting together a recipe…(that’s all you need to do!)…please contact Debs at lovepeaceandcupcake4@virginmedia.com and she can pass your details on to Sarah.

Earth Hour – Join us for a candlelit dinner!

Mr V and I love getting involved in any food challenges and events that come our way so when Sara at Cake Communications asked us to participate in Earth Hour, we took her up on her offer.

I hadn’t heard of Earth Hour before. It is an initiative run by the WWF to encourage people to turn off their lights for just one hour on 31st March between 8.30pm and 9.30pm in order to conserve energy and to make us think about the planet that we all share. The plan is to bring people together during this one hour and encourage as many people as possible to turn off their lights.

This year, the WWF are suggesting that you use this time to get together with family and friends and celebrate the occasion with a candlelit dinner. I think this is a wonderful idea so on Saturday 31st, Mr V and I have invited my family up from Sussex to participate in a candlelit dinner that we will be preparing. We will do this live on the night and tweet photos and updates as we go. It would be amazing if you could do the same and we could all keep in touch with each other’s progress through Twitter on the night.

I should just add at this point, this is the WWF as in the World Wide Fund. It has nothing to do with wrestling, much to my brothers disappointment so he has declined the invitation!

To help people decide what to cook at their candlelit dinners, a host of celebrity chefs have got involved including Bryn Williams who has kindly produced some recipes for people to use. You can read Bryn’s recipes here.

If you’d like to host your own dinner party and join us and many others at in foodie celebration during Earth Hour, you can download a dinner party guide here.

I’ll look forward to seeing your photos and hearing about what you are going to cook!

Embassy cafe- The humble little cafe that serves great vegetarian food!

For a long time I watched Embassy Cafe’s daily menu pop up on Twitter and retweeted it but for ages that was as close as I got to tasting it. Everything always looks so delicious and unusual and I love the way the menu changes every day.

A few months back, Ben and I decided it was about time we tried it and met there for lunch. Embassy Cafe is a very humble little place, based in Cathays Community Centre. It is a vegetarian cafe and uses local and fairtrade produce and produce they grow themselves on the premises. They also make great vegan and wheat free cakes.

You can get  yourself the usual sandwich or salad and everyday the soup of the day and main meal option changes. I quite like the way they only have one main on offer, it’s like a food lottery!  Being such a meat lover, I don’t usually opt for vegetarian. Even if the veggie option looks good, I still usually go for a meat dish but at Embassy Cafe, the menu is always so appealing and very different from your usual ‘vegetarian lasagne’ or risotto that meat doesn’t even feature in my thoughts.

The day that we visited, the main meal was beetroot curry with chicpea side and pickled red cabbage with rice so we decided to give it a try.

I have to admit, after reading the menu day after day, I wasn’t sure that we had picked the best day but it was very nice. The beetroot curry was very unusual and was essentially beetroot with some curry spices but I enjoyed it. I particularly liked the chicpea side. Since my first visit, I have been back several times. It’s close to where I work so I often head down for lunch with colleagues. In the last few weeks, we have had chic pea and date tagine with a cous cous salad and flat bread and a lovely dish of cheese and broccoli paties with homemade chips and apple and tomato chutney. The main meals are £5 which I think is good value.

The cafe itself is very basic as you might expect for a cafe in a community centre. It’s very small inside with mismatch furniture and chequered red and white table clothes. A chalk board announces the specials   pay for your food at the counter, take a seat and it is bought for you. There is plenty of outside space too amongst the vegetables patches on old plastic patio furniture. It’s always popular and populated by a real eclectic mix of people.

It’s by no means fancy and it’s not exactly aesthetically pleasing but I think that’s the beauty of it. It’s not pretending to be anything special, it is what it is and the food speaks for itself. It offers some of the best vegetarian food I have had in a long time.

Cupcake Decorating Class for the Prince’s Trust.

Have you always wanted to make beautiful cupcakes? Are you as bad as me when it come to decorating them? If so, why not go along to a cake decorating class at LadyBird in aid of the Prince’s Trust?

The class is taking place on Saturday 10th September at 10am at Ladybird Club in Cardiff. The event has been organised by The Prince’s Bounty Fundraising Team from Hugh James Solicitors in Cardiff. This team of 14 from Hugh James and Involegal are rising to the Million Makers challenge, competing against other teams across the UK to turn a small seed funding investment into a profit of at least £10,000 for The Prince’s Trust.

Each team member is giving up their own time to raise funds to support the Princes Trust and the work they do with young people across the UK. Celebrating it’s 35th anniversary this year, the charity has helped more than 650,000 young people overcome challenges such as abuse, depression, addiction and homelessness, with more than three in four moving into work, education or training.

‘The Prince’s Bounty’ team has lots of projects planned over the next six months, from cupcake decorating classes to spa treatments, running the Cardiff half marathon and charity cinema screenings. This culminates in a larger scale masterclass for business professionals in the South Wales area featuring presentations and Q&A sessions with entrepreneurs, Welsh success stories and ambassadors from The Prince’s Trust.
